Eines kann man sicher sagen: Mit der Sweshnikov-Variante kommen die Schachprogramme nicht gut zurecht. Davon zeugen auch die Resultate. Neben den 16 Remispartien stehen sich 3 Siege von Weiss und 11 Siege von Schwarz gegenüber. Der T2002-Sieger TheKing312X hat ebensowenig wie ChessTiger14 Bäume ausgerissen. Souverän aufgetreten sind Fritz7006 und Junior7. Die Ueberraschung in diesem ersten Umgang bildet Hiarcs732, während Weltmeister Shredder mit 40 Prozent nicht ganz zufrieden sein dürfte.

One thing seems to be clear: chess programs do not understand the Sweshnikov variation in the Sicilian defence. The results obtained confirm this observation: apart from 16 drawn games, White has won 3 games only whereas Black got 11 wins. An excellenct performance showed Fritz7006 and Junior7. Somewhat surprising the good result of Hiarcs732. World computer chess champion Shredder602 may not be fully satisfied with a score of 40 percent. But what about the leader of the previous T2002 tournament TheKing312X and ChessTiger14. Both these programs do obviously not at all like the chosen opening.

Ein Desaster mit dieser Stellung erlebten ChessTiger14 und Junior7, aber auch Fritz7006 zeigte wenig von seinem üblichen Glanz. Hingegen brillierte Angriffskünstler TheKing312X, während auch Shredder602 imstande war, seine Qualitäten zu offenbaren. Die grosse Ueberraschung war Hiarcs732, der sich im Mittelfeld klar behaupten konnte.

Both, ChessTiger14 and Junior7, did not at all like the given position and the 10 rounds ended with almost a disaster for these good chess programs, whereas also Fritz7006 was unable to demonstrate more than middle class. On the other hand, TheKing312X played some very exiting attacking games, and Shredder602 obtained almost the same result in a complete different manner. And with Hiarcs732 we have [so far] the surprise of this tournament.

Es bestätigt sich, was man allgemein über Computerprogramme und die Französische Verteidigung hören tut: Diesen Stellungstyp verstehen viele Programme nur wenig bis gar nicht. Infolge mangelnder Königssicherheit spielen Hiarcs732 und TheKing312X das fehlerhafte 11...0-0?, aber werden dafür nicht einmal von allen Programmen bestraft. So passiert es sogar, dass Shredder602 mit 12.Lxh7+ gegen TheKing312X ein Gewinn bringendes Läuferopfer bringt, die Partie jedoch sogar noch verliert. Andererseits gelingt es sowohl Fritz7006 wie auch ChessTiger14, das holländische Programm mit der Fortsetzung 12.Sg5 innert 18 identischen Zügen zu besiegen. Als unbeständig hat sich Shredder602 erwiesen, denn mit Schwarz produzierte das Programm je zweimal 11...h6 und 11...Tb8, aber unverständlicherweise auch einmal 11...0-0, worauf prompt ein Verlust gegen ChessTiger14 resultierte. Aus den zehn Partien erzielten Hiarcs732 und TheKing312X nur je drei magere Punkte. Als Star in dieser Position entpuppte sich Junior7, während auch Fritz7006 ausgezeichnet mit der Stellung zurecht kam. ChessTiger14 erzielte das erste Mal ein Score von 50 Prozent, vielleicht der Beginn eines allgemeinen Aufwärtstrends. Und schliesslich erstaunlich: war in Position 2 TheKing312X der Sieger, so steht er dieses Mal als grosser Verlierer da.

It is well known: there are not many programs who understand how to play the French Defence. And due to insufficient params regarding king safety, Hiarcs732 and TheKing312X plays the faulty 11...0-0, but to my surprise were not punished for this by all programs. It even happened that Shredder602, after playing the strong bishop sacrifice 12.Bxh7+, lost the game vs TheKing312X. On the other hand, Fritz7006 and ChessTiger14 suceeded in defeating the Dutch program of Johan de Koning with 12.Ng5 within only 18 identical moves. On the other hand it was Shredder602 playing rather instable: in two games the German program chose 11...h6, twice 11...Rb8 and once even the faulty 11...0-0 and this game vs ChessTiger14 went of course lost. With only 3 points out of 10 games, Hiarcs732 and TheKing312 confirm that they are no friends of the Winawer variation. Junior7 was doing best by obtaining remarkable 8 points out of 10 games. Also Fritz7006 reached a very satsifactory result. And the first time in this tournament, ChessTiger14 got a score of 50 percent: hopefully the beginning of an upward trend. And finally one astonishing thing: in position 2, TheKing312X was the winner and here in position 3, the same program was the great loser.

Als souveräner Sieger in der Nunn-Position 4 ging ChessTiger14 hervor, der aus 10 Partien volle 8 Punkte (= 80 %) holte und sich so rangmässig stark verbessern konnte. Auch Fritz7006 tat sich recht gut und konnte seinen ersten Tabellenplatz halten. Mit der strategisch anspruchsvollen Stellung ueberhaupt nicht zurecht kamen Junior7 und Hiarcs732. Trotzdem liegt Junior7 gesamthaft noch immer auf dem zweiten Platz.

The Nunn position 4 seems to be adapted perfectly to the playing style of ChessTiger14, who obtained the sensational result of 8 points out of 10 games (= 80 %). This of course contributed to a much improved ranking in this tournament. Also Fritz7006 did well and the program could hold his first place. On the contrary, Junior7 and Hiarcs732 suffered badly in this position, although Junior7 was able to defend his second place.

Mit Ausnahme von Hiarcs732, das 11.Tac1 spielte, kamen alle theoretisch bekannten Abspiele mit 11.Tab1, 11.Tae1 und 11.h3 auf's Brett. Die 9 Siege von Weiss, 8 Siege von Schwarz und 13 Remispartien bestätigen die Ausgeglichenheit dieser Stellung. Souveräner Sieger in dieser Serie wurde Fritz7006 ohne eine einzige Niederlage. Die übrigen Programme liegen eng beieinander, einzig Hiarcs732 konnte mit der Nunn Position 5 gar nicht anfangen.

With the exception of Hiarcs732, who chose 11.Rac1, all the theoretical well known plans with 11.Rab1, 11.Rae1 and 11.h3 were played. White won 9 games, Black 8 games and 13 games ended with a draw, This shows that the position is rather balanced. Fritz7006 is the great winner of this serie, whereas the other programs obtained almost equal results. However, Hiarcs732 can of course not at all be satisfied with his 2,5 points out of 10 games.

Das zur Diskussission stehende Abspiel der Grünfeldindischen Verteidigung zeigt mit 15 Siegen für Weiss, 5 Siegen für Schwarz, und 10 Remispartien, dass die Stellung zumindest aus Sicht der Computerprogramme nicht ausgeglichenen ist. Man kann es auch anders formulieren: die Schachprogramme sind ausserstande, die Stellung zu verstehen und richtig zu behandeln. Ein derartiges Missverhältnis von weissen Siegen und schwarzen Niederlagen gab es - allerdings mit umgekehren Vorzeichen - nur noch bei der Nunn Position 1 [Sveshnikov]. Interessant auch, dass kein Programm ein Score von 8 Punkten aus 10 Partien erzielte und insgesamt drei Programme 6,5 Punkte erzielten. Und besonders auffallend die absolut aus dem Rahmen fallende schwache Leistung [10 %] von TheKing312X, was zur Folge hatte, dass Johan de Koning's Programm in der Gesamtwertung auf den zweitletzten Platz abgerutscht ist. Das wär nicht weiter schlimm, doch hat das Programm den Anschluss nach oben verloren.

Considering the 15 White wins, the 5 Black wins and the 10 drawn games, one must assume that the Nunn position 6 is at least from computer's sight not a balanced one. Or in other words, we can say that the chess programs do not understand how to deal with this position. A similar disproportion of White wins and Black losses - in reverse order however - only happened in the Nunn position 1 [Sveshnikov]. Interesting to see that this time no program reached a score of 8 points out of 10 games and that three programs achieved 6,5 points. And if you look at the result of TheKing312X [10 %] it is not wrong to say that Johan de Koning's program experienced a real disaster thus dropping to 5th place in the total ranking of the tournament. This would be no problem, but there is now a great gap to the higher ranked programs.

Mit der komplexen Damenindisch-Stellung kam Junior7 mit Abstand am besten zurecht, denn 8 Punkte aus 10 Partien sprechen eine deutliche Sprache. Auf gerade mal 50 Prozent brachten es Shredder602 und Fritz7006, während die übrigen Programme mit ihrer Leistung nicht ganz zufrieden sein können. Insbesondere TheKing312X hätte nach seinem Einbruch in Nunn-Position 6 die Punkte dringend gebraucht. Anscheinend haben die Computerprogramme mit Schwarz ihre liebe Mühe, da den 5 Schwarzsiegen bei 10 Remis immerhin 15 Siege der Weissspieler gegenüberstehen. Hiarc732 scheint sich vom letzten Platz nicht lösen zu können. Es ist Zeit für Hiarcs8.

It was Junior7 to deal best with the complex Queens Indian position: 8 points out of 10 games do confirm this. A score of just 50 percent obtained Shredder602 and Fritz7006, whereas the other programs cannot be fully satisfied. In particular Johan de Koning's TheKing312X - after his disaster in the Nunn position 6 - had needed some more points. It looks as if Hiarcs732 will no longer be able to let the last place to another program. It is high time for Hiarcs8. The computer programs were in this position quite successful with the white pieces: 15 wins, but could win only 5 games with the black pieces.

Mit der Königsindischen Verteidigung kam ChessTiger14 am besten zurecht, während auch Shredder602 eine gute Leistung an den Tag legte. Für einmal konnte Fritz7006 nicht so glänzen und erreichte nicht einmal 50 Prozent. Noch schlechtere Resultate erzielten Hiarcs732 und überraschenderweise auch Junior7, das mit dem strategisch anspruchsvollen Plan Mühe bekundete. Zum zweiten Mal steht jedoch TheKing312X mit nur 3 Punkten aus 10 Partien am Ende der Tabelle. Langsam fragen wir uns wirklich, ob TheKing.eng v3.12d schlechter ist als die v3.12, denn gute Partien wie im T2002 haben wir von diesem Programm kaum mehr gesehen.

This time, in the classical kings indian defence, it was ChessTiger14 to prove that this program still belongs to the best chess engines of the world. Only Shredder602 reached also a score of more than 50 percent. And by way of exception, Fritz7006 showed some unknown weaknesses in this kind of position. It went even worse for Hiarcs732 and most surprisingly also for Junior7 with 40 percent. But for the second time in this Nunn test, Johan de Koning's TheKing312X showed a very disappointing behaviour. Fairly spoken, we can hardly believe that TheKing v3.12d is the same engine like v3.12 that won the T2002 tournament. It's a long time ago that we have seen a real good game of this engine ... that's all very strange.

In diesem 10-er Paket wäre Fritz7006 Weltmeister geworden, wenn auch nicht mit grosser Ueberlegenheit, denn keines der Programme konnte mehr als ein Score von 60 Prozent erreichen. Endlich auch wieder mal ein Comeback von TheKing312X, aber das kommt eindeutig zu spät. Erstaunlich jedoch, dass den 16 Gewinnpartien von Weiss bei 10 x Remis nur gerade 4 Schwarzsiege gegenüberstehen. Die relativ ruhige Nunn-Stellung 9 scheint also bei Computerprogramme eindeutig zum Vorteil für Weiss auszuschlagen. Nun geht es in den Endspurt, und man kann sich fragen, ob es noch gelingt, den bislang souveränen Fritz7006 noch aufzuhalten. Beim Kampf um die Plätze 2-4 ist noch alles offen, während TheKing312X versuchen muss, sein wenig erfreuliches Gesamtscore noch kräftig zu verbessern. Und wahrscheinlich wird Hiarcs732 vom letzten Platz nicht wegzukommen. Aber lassen wir uns überraschen.

In this serie, Fritz7006 would have been the world champion, although with the maximum score of 60 percent no program demonstrated its superiority. The comeback of TheKing312X came too late. A very astonishing thing to me was that 16 games ended with a win for White whereas only 4 games showed a win with the black pieces. The rather quiet Nunn position 9 obviously gives a clear edge to the computer programs when playing the white pieces. And now, we are soon coming to the end of the Nunn Test 1 and the only question is: which program may be able to stop Fritz7006? And which programs will be placed 2-4? All can happen here. The aim of TheKing312X should be to somewhat improve his bad score. And most probably Hiarcs732 will remain at the last place.

Die einzige wirklich unklare, materiell ungleiche und sehr dynamische Nunn-Stellung zeigt einen Sieger, der in diesem Turnier selten geglänzt hat: Es ist TheKing312X mit 7,5 Punkten aus 10 Partien. Auch Fritz7006 und ChessTiger14 dürfen zufrieden sein, während im negativen Sinn auffällt, dass ausgerechnet der Angriffskünster Junior7 mit 3,5 Punkten total versagt hat, wobei das israelische Programm mit Weiss nur gerade 1,5 Punkte aus 5 Partien holte. Und Hiarcs732: das Programm hat sich in dieser Stellung endültig das Grab geschaufelt und eine unwahrscheinlich magere Ausbeute von 10 % erzielt.

The Nunn position 10 was the only unclear, dynamic position with unbalanced material and here it was the first time in this tournament that TheKing312X confirmed his real playing strenght with 7,5 points out of 10 games. Also Fritz7006 and ChessTiger14 may be satisfied, but to our great surprise the Israelin program Junior7 failed with 3,5/10 failed completely in this position. And Hiarcs732: this program had been digging his own grave in this position.

In diesem Test mit vorgegebenen Eröffnungsstellungen sehen wir, dass Fritz7 der wirkliche Alles-Könner ist, während
insbesondere der souveräne Sieger des T2002-Turniers mit den 10 Nunn-Stellungen gar nicht zurechtkam und so doch
einigermassen überraschend nicht einmal 50 Prozent erzielte. Was sich auch in diesem Turnier zeigte ist, dass
Hiarcs732 wirklich nicht mehr mit der Spitze mithalten kann und ein Update dieses guten Programms unumgänglich
geworden ist.

At first glance it becomes clear that Fritz7 is an allround engine being able to deal most positions well enough
and better than its counterparts. Somewhat surprising to see however the bad performance of the great winner in
the T2002 tournament, TheKing312X. It seems that Johan de Koning's program did not at all like the 10 Nunn
positions. Another thing to mention is that it was again Hiarcs732 to take last place. And as already said
earlier: it is high time for a new version of this program.
